The Industrial Railway Society was founded in 1949 as the Birmingham Locomotive Club - Industrial Locomotive Information Section. The Society is the leading organization in the United Kingdom devoted to the study of all aspects, and all gauges, of privately owned industrial railways and locomotives, both at home and overseas. Collieries, opencast coal pits, steel works, gas works, peat bogs, Ministry of Defence depots, engineering works, docks, electric power stations, etc, are all covered by the Society. Also details of various railway preservation groups and their locomotives, etc.
You should find this site easy to use with all of the main categories listed on the menu bar at the top Many of these have sub categories.
We publish a range of illustrated historical handbooks covering all known industrial locomotives, area by area in the UK, plus some other countries. Other books include builders histories, company histories, and an invaluable guide book (Existing Locomotives - EL Series) listing every current industrial and preserved locomotive in the whole British Isles.
IRS publications are usually offered to members at a substantial discount on the normal purchase price (the members price for each book is shown on the site). You can join the Society for just £24 per year and in addition to these discounts you will receive four quarterly magazines (the Industrial Railway RECORD), six bi-monthly newsletters (Bulletins) plus access to our substantial library and archive. See the Membership tab for full details.
IRS MEMBERS need to register on the site and also email us asking to be added as an IRS Member. You will receive an email from us confirming your membership and you will then be able to order at members prices. This process can take up to 24 hours.
