The Railway Foundry, Leeds Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd - The Diesel Era

The Society is pleased to announce that the long-awaited follow-up to the late Ron Redman’s ‘The Railway Foundry’ Leeds 1839-1969’ book (published by Goose & Sons in 1972). The book employs the same format and page size as the earlier volume and consists of 204 pages with a hardback cover and end papers. The first book detailed every steam locomotive produced by Hudswell’s, and likewise the new book contains a makers list for all the diesel, petrol and battery electric locomotives. The book contains fourteen chapters which provide a detailed commentary on the internal combustion and other non-steam locomotives built by Hudswell’s. There are comprehensive details of the various miniature locomotive systems supplied by Hudswell’s such as those at Blackpool and Scarborough. There are also chapters describing the types of engines used in Hudswell Clarke locomotives, the development of flameproof mines type locomotives and a personal retrospective about the ‘Junin’ locomotive.
